Coffee Soap Benefits: What It Does for Your Skin and How to Use It
Coffee soap is one of the simplest ways to add gentle exfoliation to your daily routine. Here is what it actually does, which claims to ignore, and how to use it so it smooths your skin rather than scratching it.
What is coffee soap?
Coffee soap is a bar with ground coffee mixed into the soap base. The grounds give it a slightly gritty texture that works like a mild scrub, while the base does the cleansing. A good coffee soap uses finely milled grounds. Coarse grounds can feel scratchy, especially on the face.
Coffee soap benefits
- Smoother skin: the grounds physically buff away the dead skin cells that make skin feel rough.
- A brighter look: removing that dull top layer helps skin look fresher and more awake.
- Less oil and buildup: the lather lifts sweat, oil and city grime, which suits oily and combination skin.
- Better results from moisturiser: skin that isn't coated in dead cells takes moisturiser more evenly.
What the research does and does not say
Coffee is rich in antioxidants and caffeine, and caffeine appears in many eye creams and body products. Most of the research on coffee and skin, though, is about drinking coffee or about concentrated caffeine creams, not soap. In a bar you rinse off after a minute, the clear benefit is physical exfoliation.
Be sceptical of claims that coffee soap removes cellulite, cures acne or lightens your skin. There is no good evidence for any of them.
Who should use coffee soap?
It suits normal, oily and combination skin, rough elbows and knees, and anyone whose skin looks dull from buildup. If your skin is sensitive or sunburned, or you have active, inflamed acne, use a non-scrubbing bar on those areas instead, such as our Rice Radiance Soap.
How to use coffee soap
- Wet the bar and your skin with warm water. Coffee soap lathers best in warm water and poorly in cold.
- For your face, work up a lather in your hands first.
- Massage in gentle circles for 20 to 30 seconds. Let the grounds do the work rather than pressing hard.
- Rinse well and pat dry.
- Follow with a moisturiser, and sunscreen in the morning.
On the body, most people can use it every day. On the face, start every other day and use it more often if your skin stays comfortable.
Make your bar last longer
Handmade soap without hardening fillers softens if it sits in water. Keep it on a draining dish away from the shower spray, and cut a new bar in half so only one piece is in use at a time.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use coffee soap on my face?
Yes, if the grounds are finely milled. Start every other day, keep the pressure light, and avoid any broken or inflamed skin.
Does coffee soap lighten skin?
No. It can make skin look brighter by removing dead skin, but it does not change your natural skin colour.
Is coffee soap good for acne?
It helps with oil and buildup on skin that gets occasional breakouts, but avoid scrubbing over active, inflamed spots. For breakout-prone skin, read our neem soap guide.
Why doesn't my coffee soap lather much?
Use warm water. Coffee soap lathers far better in warm water than in cold.
